Frequently asked Questions
- Q:What experience do I need?
A:none - we welcome everyone from complete beginners to experienced sailors.
- Q:What do you do on Sail Fridays?
A:We typically meet at Hamble River Dinghy Park at 5pm. We then rig the boats and all go for a couple of hours
sailing in the Hamble river, Southampton Water and the Solent. An club helm is allocated to
each boat but when it's safe to do so they normally let the crew take turns at the helm.
- Q:What should I wear?
A:A bouyancy aid. (the club may be able to provide one if you don't own your own)
Suitable clothing. Your feet and legs will get wet while launching, and although
we try to avoid it you may end up swimming in the cold waters of the Solent.
It's also normally colder, and windier on the water than on the land.
(I only capsized once last season and that was because we were playing).
The RNLI make various good recomendations.
I started with cheap old watherproof trousers and waterproof jacket, warm clothes and old trainers.
I've since bought sailing gloves and boots and am about to get myself a wetsuit.
It's your responsibility what you wear, just remember you want to be able to survive in cold water as long as possible.
